Uthayan is a Sri Lankan daily newspaper that caters to the Tamil-speaking population. It is published by the esteemed New Uthayan Publication (Private) Limited, which is a constituent of the illustrious Uthayan Group of Newspapers. The newspaper was established in 1985 and operates from the city of Jaffna. It has a sister newspaper, Sudar Oli, which is headquartered in Colombo. Notably, Uthayan was the sole newspaper that continued its operations in Jaffna during the civil war. Unfortunately, the newspaper has faced numerous challenges, including repeated attacks, targeted killings of its personnel by paramilitary groups, and persistent threats.
